Safer Environment For Gay Students

An effort to make the learning environment of students who identify as being gay, lesbian, bi-sexual or trans-gender safer. About 80 gathered in Fort Frances for a regional conference Wednesday. Human rights-consultant Chris D'Sousa says having school administrators and teachers on hand is encouraging. D'Sousa encourages students work with their teachers in promoting dignity and human rights within their schools.

National Day Of Honour

Thunder Bay's Royal Canadian Legion is hosting a National Day of Honour today at the Afghanistan Monument in Waverly Park. The event pays tribute to those soldiers who took part in Canada's mission in Afghanistan. Thunder Bay Rainy River MP John Rafferty says its great to see a local ceremony but notes the Federal day in Ottawa came under fire from former military officials and the National Legion. The event at 1 will honour three local soldiers killed in combat Corporal Anthony Boneca, Private Robert Costall and Private Josh Klukie.

Airport Shows Record Figures

Thunder Bay International Airport is showing record numbers of passenger volumes for 2013, according to an annual report. Airport President and CEO Scott McFadden believes there is a correlation between these figures and our region's mining activity.  McFadden adds that a slow year for mining has lead to a decrease in passenger volumes for the early part of 2014.

Murder Trial Continues In Kenora

Police officers have been providing the bulk of the testimony so far at the 2nd degree murder trial of Kenneth Ivall and Angela Duchesne.  Members of the OPP and former Kenora police were at the Tim Horton's Restaurant near the crime scene, the morning that Ed Wilson was killed.  Yesterday constable Miranda Duggan testified that she noticed several spots of a blood-like substance on the bathroom floor in the restaurant, and also by the sink.  Shortly after she was called out to an accident scene at the CP rail tracks, where the body of Ed Wilson was found.  Testimony will continue today at the Kenora Court House. 

Great Pumpkin Compost Collection

The Great Pumpkin Compost Collection is announcing it's return from November 1st to 12th. EcoSuperior invites you to bring your old pumpkins to one of the three composting sites. Spokesperson Jason Sherband says the pumpkins go through an eco-friendly process once they are disposed.

Don't Let The Bedbugs Bite

The Social Services Board is taking complaints of bed bugs at the Royal Edward Arms seriously. Spokesperson Terry Flaherty says they've dealt with five confirmed cases this month alone. Terry Flaherty says any future cases of bed bugs should be reported immediatly and they will deal with it as soon as possible.

Dryden Welcomes Familiar Face To Council

Sid Wintle says he's anxious to get started on Dryden Council.  The former Mayor and Councilor was elected in Monday's bye-election for the one vacant Council seat.  Wintle says cleaning up the City's finances is his number one priority.

Police bust grow op

Police are charging a 54 year old man with a number of offences after busting up a grow op.  Officers searched a home on Saari Road in Oliver Paipoonge Friday and found almost a hundred thousand dollars worth of marijuana.

Cariou talking tourism

Not a lot of growth in the tourism industry this past summer. That's the feeling of the Executive Director of the Ontario Sunset Country Travel Association. Gerry Cariou says the sluggish American economy continues to be a drag on the local tourist industry. Cariou does say they did see some improvement with border crossing issues, with fewer complaints this summer.

Festive train coming back

A popular family oriented fundraiser is coming back to Northwestern Ontario for another year. The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train will roll into Thunder Bay December 2nd . Spokesperson Kevin Hrysak says they will once again be collecting food and money for area Food Banks.

Tidy Trays taking off

A Thunder Bay entrepreneur is seeing his dream come true.  Dan Cheal is the inventor of Tidy Trays, a reusable high chair tray cover.  Cheal says the major American retailer, Walgreens, will be stocking his product in all it's 81 hundred stores in the States.

Still no hearing for stabbing suspect

There's another bail hearing set for tomorrow for a city man charged in connection with a recent stabbing spree.   19 year old Eli John is still in hospital following the incident at Andras Court nine days ago.  Prosecutors expect he will be back at the District Jail for his Tuesday court appearance.

Man dies at Kakabeka Falls

OPP are reporting that a man is dead after he went over Kakabeka Falls and the province's Special Investigations Unit is now looking into it.   Police are saying very little about the situation now except to say they, along with other emergency personnel  were called to the Provincial Park around 4:15 Wednesday afternoon to deal with a "situation".  

Nipigon Fire Chief victim of fatal accident

The chief of the Nipigon Fire Department is dead following a traffic accident near the community Saturday night.     Roy Cross was the victim of a single vehicle mishap on Highway 11-17, two kilometres west of Nipigon.  Thunder Bay Fire Chief John Hay calls the death a big loss for the fire community in Northwestern Ontario calling him a good chief and a close friend and family man.   Funeral arrangements are pending

Williams returns to old position

It's deja vu all over again for Dr. David Williams.   He is returning to Thunder Bay to become the new Medical Officer of Health, a position he held for many years before heading to Toronto to take up a senior public health position there.   Dr. Williams will be joined by Dr. Janet DeMille who will be the Associate M-O-H.

High price of gold affects jewellery demand

The talk at next week's jewellery show in Toronto will be the price of gold which is over 16 hundred dollars an ounce. Thunder Bay's Dave Douglas says that price is causing many consumers to buy products made of something else adding that silver has taken the place of gold as far as jewellery goes.  Douglas says with the price of gold predicted to go higher, buying gold now is the wise choice

Rydholm has deer concerns

City Councillor Linda Rydolm believes there are too many deer in the city and that's causing problems, especially in her Neebing Ward. She wants to ask city administration to look into solutions on how to possibly reduce the population.   Ryholm says the deer contribute to property damage and have become a road hazard

Mauro says it's still a good deal

Thunder Bay Atikokan's MPP says work from Toronto's new transit plan will still benefit the City.  Bill Mauro says the changes in the Bombardier light rail contract are not as bad as it seems. Mauro adds Bombardier will be paid for the 130 cars they will build; not 770 million dollars for the original order of 180 cars.

Baird talks budget

Members of the Conservative Government continue to sell their budget despite election talk in the air.  John Baird is the regional Minister of Northern Ontario and says the opposition is voting against the 4 million dollar Cyclotron.  The Liberals plan to introduce a non-confidence motion.
