Snow Makes Travel Difficult

City Parks Manager Werner Schwar decided to utilize the winter weather this morning and ski to work.  The dump of snow made it difficult for many residents to make it to work.

New No Frills Open

The city's new No Frills store on Edward Street opened its doors to customers this morning. Darcy Leduc is the Owner and says he looks forward to talking with his customers about what they would like to see in the grocery store.  The store is 24-thousand square feet in size and has been remodeled to include wooden slates on walls, wood crates for display cases and softer lighting.  The County Fair No Frills store is expected to open up soon as well.

Movember

It's Movember, and local men will be growing their facial hair to raise awareness about Prostate Cancer. Movember Campaign Chair Jon Hendel says there's many ways residents can take part in the fundraising effort.  Last year's local Movember campaign raised almost 30-thousand dollars. Big Lots Open In Thunder Bay

Thunder Bay's Liquidation World is now a Big Lot store.  Big Lots Canada President Joe Cooper says it's been a lengthy process of opening up Canadian stores.  A grand opening celebration was held this morning.  Thunder Bay's store is the fifth to be opened in Canada.

Flu Shot Clinics Up & Running

Thunder Bay's Health Unit is preparing the masses for the upcoming flu season.  They kicked off their annual flu shot clinics today at the Italian Cultural Centre.  Dr. Janet DeMille is the Health Unit's Associate Medical Officer of Health and says they're not sure how harsh the flu season will be this year but notes last year's was worse than previous years. Aboriginal Day At Marina Park

Aboriginal Day ceremonies began in the city with a sunrise ceremony at the marina at 5:00 o'clock.  It kicked off a day of activities that will run until 8:00 o'clock this evening and is being put on by the city's National Aboriginal Day Committee.  Events will be held at Travelodge Airlane and The Health Sciences Centre to name just a few.

Crowd walks out of council chambers

Anti-wind farm supporters stormed out of last night's council meeting before the final vote was held.  Councillor Rebecca Johnson was speaking about how many early Thunder Bay residents could have been wary of hydro lines running up and down city streets, and how noisey some generators can be.  During her time on the mic, many of the anti-wind farm supporters left the chambers in droves.

Snow Birds Demonstration and Community Fund

Northwestern Ontario's aboriginal students will now have access to a quarter million dollar endowment fund for post secondary education. The fund was created by Ontario's transport medicine group "ORNGE" and the aviation company AgustaWestland. The fund was created to help the growing aboriginal population take part in the emerging career field of medical transport. Confederation College President Pat Lang is happy first nation students will have the extra funds to take part in their aviation courses. The community endowment fund was announced at the College's Aviation Day and fly by demonstration of the Snow birds.
